BAKÁ DANCES

Dancing is at the centre of every Baká people’s entertainment. The Baká people have three main types of dances. There is the freestyle dance which entails one basically dancing freely to the rhythm and the tempo of the songs and the drums. These are very common when the dance occasion is open for all. There is then the agbaya dance or the leg revolver, which entails revolving one leg at a time around each other while at the same time paddling the dancer to move forward or backward. Another tribe that does the agbaya dance is the Balanda tribe. The rhythm and drum tempos for this type of dance are normally gentle and mostly follows the 145 Beats Per Minute (BPM), Half time simple beat. There is then the circle dance where every dancer moves in circle around the drum beaters and instrument players. This could also be freestyle but in most cases, they are particular movement patterns to follow.
